Politicians Fail to Cancel Nago Sugar Plant Closing

Date Posted: 2001-04-06

Nago Assembly members visited last Friday the Haneji plant of Ryuyou Seitou, a sugar refinery in Nago, in order to ask for the facility to stay in the city. The factory is scheduled to move from Nago to Gushikawa.

The president of the company said, "For us, this is a decision for survival. Thus we cannot reconsider."

The plant finished all work on the same day and prepared for closure despite the efforts of the local politicians.

The company was established two years ago by joining two plants, the Haneji plant operated by Hokubu Seitou and the Gushikawa plant owned by Okinawa JA. Since the production of sugar cane has been decreasing, Haneji plant has become too large for the small amount of sugar it produces and too costly. The company decided in December that they would close the Haneji plant and move all production to the Gushikawa plant.
