Association Promotes Colorful Garb in Offices

Date Posted: 2000-09-01

To promote the use of so called “Kariyushi Wear” dress code, the proponents of the attire have formed the “Hai-sai We Love Kariyushi Wear Association.” The stated aim of the new association is to have the officials at city and prefecture offices, hotels, banks and other public facilities to dress in Kariyushi Wear at least 100 days of the year.

The Kariyushi Wear dress code consists of a colorful open neck shirt and simple slacks or skirt. The attire was introduced before the G-8 Summit as an alternative dress code during the hot, humid summer, and immediately gained wide popularity at many companies which until now had dressed their salaried workers in suits and ties for men or uniform dress for women regardless of the weather.

The new association is inviting members to join. The cost for individuals is ¥1,000 per year for individuals and ¥10,000 per year for companies. The association will offer 10 percent discount on the shirts. They will also print and distribute pamphlets and tour maps of Okinawa.
