Less Tourists, More Students Visit Okinawa This Year

Date Posted: 2000-09-01

Among this year’s mostly disappointing tourism figures in Okinawa, the number of school children visiting the prefecture as a part of their peace studies curriculum is a shining exception. The number of students is reportedly up 19 percent from a year ago and showing all signs of continuing the increase. 84 percent of those groups consist of high school students who stay on the island an average of four days and three nights.

An increasing number of unversity students are also visiting Okinawa in order to tour the prefecture’s battle sites and to attend seminars and conventions. Most also reportedly find time to visit one of Okinawa’s beautiful beaches.
