Landmark Naha Hotel To Close

Date Posted: 2000-09-01

One of Naha Cityís landmark hotels, Naha Tokyu Hotel in Naha Cityís Ameku district, is going to close its doors at the end of November. The closing of the hotel is a part of the on-going restructuring of the Tokyu Hotel chain to streamline its business and close unprofitable facilities.

The chain already closed the Ginza Tokyu Hotel in Tokyo in February. Okayama Tokyu Hotel will be closed simultaneously with the Naha facility. The Naha Tokyu Hotel was first opened in 1951 under the name Ryukyu Hotel, that was changed to Naha Tokyu Hotel in 1974.

It is a fully owned subsidiary of Tokyu Hotels that currently employs 70 people. Tokyu Hotels also owns the building and and the land on which the hotel stands. Announcing the closing of the hotel, the management said that the company had no immediate plans concerning the fate of the property.

Once considered the epitome of Naha cityís stylish hotels, the Naha Tokyu Hotel has reportedly been in the red for several years in a row. Although popular with local residents who like to visit the hotelís restaurants and outdoor swimming pool and beer garden, the hotel has lately sorely missed overnight guests, a spokesman for the hotel management said.
