Blaze rips through Chatan junkyard

Date Posted: 2002-01-10

A fire broke out at a junkyard in Chatan Town at around 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, destroying approximately 200 scrapped cars in a 1,500-square-meter area and sending dense black smoke 20 meters into the air. Police are investigating the cause of the blaze. The fire was extinguished within three hours with the assistance of 20 fire engines and 80 firefighters from Kadena Air Base, USMC Camp Butler and Kadena Town痴 fire brigade. No injuries were reported.

The affected area, known as Miyagi Zero District, is owned by the government of Japan and managed by the prefecture; however, junkyard dealers and industrial waste disposal firms have been using the site illegally for some time. Chatan Mayor Choichi Hentona stated that he would take immediate action to implement emergency measures to halt the illegal occupancy, which has been causing concern among the town痴 residents.
