Information Disclosure Regulations Worst in Okinawa

Date Posted: 2001-04-06

As of Apr. 1, Okinawa Prefecture, and Naha, Urasoe, Nishihara and Sashiki are the only cities and towns that have set up official regulations on information disclosure.

The enactment rate of such regulations in Okinawa is 5.7%, which is the worst in the whole nation. The nationwide average is 43.2%.

A specialist familiar with the regulations says information disclosure is an inevitable requirement for local governments, especially in this era of decentralization. Prefecture's Local Government Affairs Section plans to strongly urge the local government offices for the enactment. Under the national freedom of information legislation, local governments have been rapidly enacting the regulations nation wide.
