Two Drum Troupes To Beat Up A Storm In Ginowan

The Mafekaji-No-Shirabe 2000 drum festival thunders onstage this weekend. Zampa Fuji Taiko drum troupe and their younger protégés Eisa Mafekaji are beating their skins at the Ginowan Civic Center this Sunday September 3. Zampa Fuji have performed all over Japan and the world since their formation in 1986. The powerful sound of their big Taiko drums, expression of the Ryukyu spirit, has been heard in Vietnam, Australia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland and America.

A member of the group has coached the other troupe drumming at Sunday’s event. The youthful Eisa Mafekaji formed in 1996, who have delighted many tourists with their exuberant show at the Gyokusendo Kingdom Village.

The show takes place at the Ginowan Civic Center. Doors open at 6.30 pm and the show starts at 7.30 pm. Advance adult tickets are ¥2500 and ¥3000 on the day. Tickets for high school students and younger are ¥1500 in advance and ¥2000 on the day. Tel 098-893-4433.
