No cut demand of US forces

Date Posted: 2001-04-06

The Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yohei Kono clearly stated on Wednesday 28 at a Lower House Foreign Affairs Committee meeting that presently, representing the Government of Japan, he would not demand US cutting forces in Okinawa right away. This was the first time that Kono officially made a statement considering the demands for cutting the number of US forces stationed in the prefecture or starting negotiations with the US on the matter. He also said, “If international relations develop positively and we are able to confirm the stability in this hemisphere, then it would be possible to start discussing the matter on the government level.”

Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine has been asking Japanese government to discuss with the US on reducing the US bases and troops stationed in Okinawa.
