Recycled Canoes

Date Posted: 2000-08-25

A Wakasa children’s group has constructed two usable canoes constructed entirely of used milk cartons and newspapers. It took a month from the children to put together the 10-feet long vessels. First the empty milk cartons were stuffed with newspaper to make them stiff. The the cartons were joined together with adhesive tape. Finally the childres sealed the seams with duct tape to make the canoes watertight. They tested the new canoes over the weekend at Naminoue Beach and found them working as planned. This is the second time Wakasa children have build floating canoes using old milk cartons. They made a similar vessel about ten years ago.
