Survey: Small Okinawan firms cannot take extended holidays

Date Posted: 2002-02-21

The Okinawa Labor Agency recently released the results of a survey conducted last July regarding the working hours of 2,771 local firms. The poll showed that due to their small size, a large number of Okinawan businesses cannot give employees as many days off as their Japanese counterparts receive. According to the report only 4.2 percent of all firms surveyed were able to take holidays of more than four daysí duration during Golden Week in the beginning of May, whereas 41.5 percent of businesses nationwide were able to do so. Moreover, 46.7 percent replied that they take two full days off per week. However 60 percent of the firms are small in size with 30 employees or less, which was assumed to be one of the reasons that it is harder to take extended holidays. As regards Okinawan holidays, 26.3 percent took a day off for Lunar New Yearís, while 65.8 percent had a vacation day to celebrate the traditional Bon holiday.
