Squid Price Dispute

Date Posted: 2000-08-25

The chairman of the Okinawa Prefecture Fishermen’s Associations’ Union announced yesterday after the union’s board meeting that the directors of the union would stay in their posts and had done nothing that would compel them to resign. The directors had come under fire over a dispute of pricing of squid. The union has its freezers full of the catch and in order to sell the product faster, the union directors decided to discount the price.

Eight of the 27 member associations then filed a complaint demanding that the directors reverse the decision and resign. According to union rules, the directors must resign if one fifth of the member associations so demand. After yesterday’s meeting, four of the eight associations announced that they will drop their demand, in effect leaving the directors in their posts.
