Annual Obon Festival Jams Traffic

Last weekend marked the annual festival of Obon that locals celebrate as an occasion for the spirits of their ancestors to visit their living families. Most of local businesses were closed down through Monday although Obon, being a religious event, is not an official national holiday. During Obon, many family members gather to the home of the family head from wherever they reside, causing massive traffic jams at the airports, trains stations and highways throughout the country. Eisa dances are also an essential part of Obon celebrations in many communities in Okinawa.
