Man Sues Hospital Over Botched Operation

Date Posted: 2000-08-18

A male patient has sued the University of the Ryukyus Hospital for mental anguish. The man entered the hospital in 1997 for a complete check-up that revealed a tumor in his colon that was subsequently surgically removed. However, after the operation the man began to suffer of continued mild fever. The doctors diagnosed a mild infection caused by the previous operation and operated on him again.

After the second operation, the manís condition worsened and the doctors performed a colon bypass. The patient obtained a second opinion from a specialist who said that the surgeons at the hospital should have closed his colon in the first place. The man is demanding unspecified compensation and an official apology from the hospital for unnecessary suffering.

The hospital claims that its doctors discussed his condition with the patient and various scenarios for treatment before conducting the operations. It says that the patient fully understood and agreed to the procedures.
