Festival Weekend of Eisa Dance, Drums and Beer

The summer festival season gets into full swing this weekend in Okinawa City and Fukunaga. The Eisa Festival starts on Koza Athletic Field on Saturday and continues Sunday. The colorful costumes and flamboyant drummers are expected to attract a big crowd.

The Summer Festival program starts on Saturday at 4 o’clock and continues until 9 pm. There will be a live concert featuring “Millennium Summer Private DJ” and entertainment will include a childrens’ drum troupe, the Motobu City Band, fireworks and a Summit Millenium Special. On the adjacent sub-athletic field Orion Beer will be holding its festival.

The company is going to supply 300 20 liter barrels for the event. Prices will be a reasonable ¥200 per cup. Orion hopes to attract 75,000 to the field over the weekend and expects the weather to be better than last year.

The festival opens at 4 pm and there will be a speech at 5. Friendship bands perform at 5.35, followed by Latin group Rubies. Kachinba, another Latin outfit perform at 6.30. It’s Friendship time again at 7.10. Ryukyu Drums will beat at 7.55 and during the beer break at 8.20 Orion’s Campaign Girls will be introduced. Fireworks close Saturday’s event at 9.30 pm.

Sunday’s Beer Festival follows much the same timetable of events, with the exception that Japanese pop band Streak come on at 6.15 and another J-pop group, One Wish takes the stage at 7.45. The Okinawa City Mayor will make a speech during the beer break at 8.10 and Rinken band will perform at 8.30. Miss Hiroshima appears at 6.10 and fireworks again close the day at 9.30.
