The Plaza Shopping Center’s Bali Fair continues this weekend. There will be Balinese dancing, food, Indonesian beer, goods and furniture on sale.

Three Indonesian cooks have been brought to serve spice island specialities at Plaza’s two restaurants, Kenny’s and Savonna. There will be delicacies like sate, fried noodles and rice, roasted pig and goat curry. On the second floor a special stage has been erected where there will be dances to gamelan music while spectators eat and drink. Bintang, Indonesia’s premier beer, will be on tap.

Twelve dancers and five musicians from the State College of Arts in the Balinese capital of Denpasar, led by Dr Komang Astita, will stage their distinctive act. Balinese dance uses richly decorated costumes and headdresses, tantalizing eye and head movements, accompanied by mesmerizing percussion, flutes and sounds of the gamelan (a large xylophone). Instrumentals start at 4.30 pm. and dance performances continue with breaks until around 9 pm. On weekdays the festival starts at 6.30 pm and again finishes around nine. Bamboo shacks in imitation of Balinese street markets have been set up on the first and second floors, selling trinkets and hand-made items. Traditional teak furniture will also be on sale.

There will also be an exhibition of Hindu religious art and a Balinese painter can be seen practising his intricate craft. The festival continues until September 1.
