Steering Wheel Aggression

Why do people who are known all over the world for their courtesy and politeness suddenly become the most inconsiderate of creatures when they get behind the steering wheel? Although numerous studies have been conducted on Driver Aggression all over the world, I have not seen transformation of character of peoples, to the extent that I have seen here in Okinawa. If you have ever been caught in a traffic bottleneck in the middle of the rush hour or stuck in a narrow alley because someone decided to park improperly on the side of the road, you will know exactly what I mean. I have seen people sitting in their cars twenty yards before a traffic signal, smoking a cigarette or talking on their cell phone with not a bit of consideration of the fact that traffic is backed up a mile because of their car. Yet when you go over to talk to them (when they are not in their car) they are so kind and so polite. It makes me wonder…
