All Morals and Respect

Date Posted: 2000-08-11

When it comes to morals and values, by today’s standards, I am a dinosaur. I believe that morals and values are the anchor that keeps humanity from floating away into the animal kingdom. Besides the intellect, is it not the etiquette, the norms, the customs and the values that differentiate humans from beasts? When we have a society that engulfs and devours every little trace of morals and respect, like a giant amoeba, then can we really call it a culture? Honestly, can we really define American culture today?

Not too long ago, before guns, drugs and teenage pregnancies became part of growing up in the most dominant culture that is America; before any thing you said or did, as long as it was on TV, was acceptable and before the word “gay” began to have a meaning other than just “happy”; people in America were not ashamed to have values. These days it is rare to find a youngster who addresses someone his father’s age as “sir”. Today if you saw some high school kids walking home from school, you’d think twice before approaching them or even worse, trying to correct them if they were acting irrationally.
