Flights to Shanghai from September

Date Posted: 2000-08-11

The Ministry of Transportation gave an official green light, Monday, to regular flights between Naha and Shanghai in China. The inaugural flight is scheduled to take off Thursday, and the regular twice a week flights by China Northwest Airlines will begin from September.

The flights will enable Okinawa Tourist Service (OTS) to begin bringing tour groups from Beijing, Shanghai and Canton to Okinawa. OTS received a license to bring Chinese tour groups to Okinawa earlier this month. A group of Okinawan political and business leaders will take the inaugural flight and pay a four-day visit to Beijing to discuss further plans to advance tourism between Okinawa and China. Okinawa is one of the 13 regions in Japan which were granted permission to start conducting tours from China.

Okinawa Prefecture officials have worked for permission to begin regular flights and tours between the prefecture and China since 1997. Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine also made two trips to China in order to promote the plan.
