Date Posted: 2000-08-11

The eighth typhoon of the season, Typhoon Juwada, buffeted Minami Daito Island with winds up to 61.5 meters per second. The typhoon moving westwards hit Okinawa main island on Monday afternoon. The threat prompted organizers of several festivals and other events scheduled for the weekend to cancel or postpone their events. These included the Tedako Festival in Urasoe City, Hagoromo Festival in Ginowan and the10,000 strong Eisa Parade on Kokusai Street in Naha City. All those festivals were scheduled for a later day. The only main festival that was held as scheduled was the Seaport Chatan Carnival that took place at Chatanís Sunset Beach Saturday and Sunday.
