Date Posted: 2000-08-11

Highway 58 was closed in Kunigami Village after it was buried under a landslide Sunday. Continuing rainy weather has prevented officials from starting repair work at the site because of fear of more landslides as the rain continues. The approaching typhoon is adding to the anxiety of local residents who fear that is may cause more landslides adding to their isolation. Currently, the residents have to take long back roads when they want to travel to Nago on their business. The trip that normally takes only 25 minutes will now take almost one and half an hour. Residents are also anxious about medical and other emergencies, as ambulances and fire engines also have to take the back roads in order to reach the village.
