Hijacking Ends in Jokes

Date Posted: 2000-08-11

Two Irabu fishermen whose boat was hijacked by three pirates in the waters off Solomon Islands were released unharmed after they took the hijackers to an island a few hours away. Hirokazu Shimosato, the captains of the boat and Morihide Nakama had been catching bait fish when their boat was approached by a boat with four men in it. Three of the men boarded the Okinawan fishing boat and forced the captain to head to another island at gunpoint. According to the captain the tension onboard was terse at first, but as they travelled on the hijackers become quite friendly and joked with the two fishermen. When they reached their destination some 20 hours later, the hijackers simply jumped ashore and left. The fishermen then returned to their homeport unharmed.
