Locals No Longer Excluded From “Clinton Park”

Date Posted: 2000-08-11

Confusion reigns over public visits to the Okinawa Friendship Plaza, commonly known among local residents as “Clinton Plaza.” The mini-park was constructed just inside Kadena Air Base Gate 2 just before the G-8 Summit.

A group of 15 parents and children wanted to visit the park a week ago but was first refused the entry by the gate guards. They rang Okinawa City officials complaining, and were finally let in after an official from Okinawa City office arrived at the gate.

According to officials at Kadena PAO, the public can visit the park daily between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Visitors are not allowed to drive to the park, but have to walk the short distance from the gate. They cannot go anywhere else on base either. The PAO says that the rules have been explained to the gate guards and the system should work now.
