German Charters to Okinawa in Two Years

Date Posted: 2000-08-11

German tour companies are planning to start bringing German and other western European tourists on chartered direct flights to Okinawa starting 2002. The plan was discussed at a meeting of the German–Japanese Tourism Promotion Committee in Hanover, Germany, last month. The successful visit of German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder to the G-8 Summit and the German Village in Ueno, Miyako Island, was widely covered in the German media and that sparked public interest in the region.

Germans with their long paid holidays and the highest incomes in Europe have been long known as Europe’s most avid travelers. Scores of German tourists can be seen at almost every resort in the world and Okinawan tourism officials now hope to put Okinawa on that map too.
