Mainland Grabs G-8 Lions’ Share

Date Posted: 2000-08-04

Okinawan construction companies are complaining that they were able to secure only a fraction of the construction projects that were related to the G-8 Summit held in Nago. They say that all major projects went to large mainland based companies with only some minor projects and subcontracts handed to Okinawans.

The only bright spot was that 99 percent of cement and construction steel was purchased from vendors within the prefecture.

Summit organizers counter that they had no choice but to go to the mainland companies because local Okinawan companies were very poor in marketing their services and did not make their existence known to the right people. They also pointed out that some construction material were not available locally when needed.
