Female Leftist to Replace Mayor

Date Posted: 2000-08-04

Naha Mayor Kosei Oyadomari announced officially his retirement from the politics when Naha City Assembly and mayoral elections are held in September. “I have been the mayor long enough. It is time that younger people take over,” Oyadomari said at a press conference announcing his retirement. At the same occasion, Oyadomari threw his support behind Michiko Horikawa, 59, as the future candidate for the mayor’s post. Oyadomari is backed by Okinawa’s leftist parties.

Horikawa is currently the director of Naha City Health and Welfare Section. “I agree that politics needs woman power, but this would be the first time for me to seek a public office and actively participate in partisan politics,” Horikawa stated at the same press conference.
