Shops and Hospital Dump Chemicals into Sewers

Officials in Yaeyama City, Ishigaki Island, have discovered that a total of nine facilities dealing with chemicals used in photo processing, have been discarding the used chemicals into the cityís sewer system. The nine include a prefecture owned hospital. According to regulations, the discarded chemicals should be kept in containers and shipped to Okinawa main island for disposal at a toxic waste disposal facility. Ishigaki Island does not have such facility. According to Yaeyama health and environment officials, some shop owners consider shipping the chemicals burdensome and expensive and thatís why some businesses try to cut corners.
