Fishermen and Restaurants Suffer Double Whammy

Date Posted: 2000-08-04

Okinawa fishermen have suffered a double whammy. First they couldn’t go to the sea because of restrictions caused by the G-8 Summit. When the Summit was over, the weather turned ugly with rains and strong winds keeping them ashore. “I have been forced to stay home for twelve days, and that means that I don’t earn any cash during this time,” one fisherman complained at Aja Fishing Port in Naha City. He went on to say that if the weather didn’t improve soon, everyone he knows would be in real trouble. The bad weather doesn’t affect only fishermen. Many restaurants that specialize in fresh seafood have been forced to cut their menus, and some have even shut their doors.
