Bus Union Will Fight Layoffs

Date Posted: 2000-08-04

Ryukyu Bus Co. will lay off 71 workers, mostly bus drivers, as a result of the company losing its contract to provide school bus services for DoD schools in Okinawa. The contract was awarded to a Tokyo based company last April, and the new contractor will take over from today.

Ryukyu Bus Co. has repeatedly appealed to various political bodies in Okinawa asking them to lobby for reconsideration, but contracting officials say that the new contractor won the bid in fairly and there is no reason to reconsider.

Naha City Assembly also sent a delegation to the U.S. embassy in Tokyo, only to be told by an embassy official that the contract is purely an economic matter and there won’t be any political considerations. The workers’ union at Ryukyu Bus vows to fight any lay-offs.
