Seaport Chatan Carnival

Date Posted: 2000-08-04

Now that the Summit hoopla is over and done with the Okinawan summer carnival season is getting up to speed, albeit somewhat late. The Seaport Chatan Carnival will kick off Saturday at Sunset Beach, a popular man-made beach outside Camp Lester.

The carnival begins with Mihama Elementary School brass band at 3 p.m. Saturday, although various sports and beach-related activities will go on from 9:30 in the morning.

Three live bands will play in the concert on stage at the seaside, including Perfect World, Majestics and Jupiter. The day will end with fireworks at 9 p.m. Sunday’s activities include children’s and adults’ dragon boat races. Okinawan-style canoes will also race through an obstacle course off shore. Sunday’s highlight are several Eisa dance groups that will perform starting at 6 p.m. Fireworks will end the festival at 9 p.m.

Other weekend festivals include Hagoromo Festival at Ginowan Kaihin Park next to the Okinawa Convention Center and Tanabata Festival at Urasoe Sports Park.

In Naha, 10,000 Eisa dancers clad in colorful costumes are expected to parade on Kokusai Street, Saturday, starting 2:30 p.m. Perhaps the best news is that the weather is expected to improve a bit by the weekend, although a new typhoon is brewing east of Okinawa and may still cause havoc and rain.
