Clean Out Old Books and Help English Literacy

Date Posted: 2001-03-30

An English Professor at the University of the Ryukyus once remarked that her students had a hard time perfecting their English skills because local libraries lacked adequate resources.

The University of Oklahoma stepped in and organized a book drive, offering an opportunity for spring cleaning and benefiting the local community at the same time.

The second annual book drive started on Monday. It offers base residents an opportunity now that spring and the PCS season are rolling around, to clean out cupboards and empty shelves of unused or discarded books.

Last year’s drive netted over 500 titles, ranging from college textbooks and computer manuals to children’s picture books and romantic novels.

The books are collected at all Okinawa’s base education centers, the libraries at Schwab, Hansen, Courtney, Kadena, Kinser, Futenma, Foster, the US Naval Hospital, as well as the Legal Services Office in Camp Foster. The texts are then donated to local universities and libraries, such as Urasoe City Library.

The main type of books wanted are textbooks and non-fiction works in good condition, written in English. However any type of adult or children’s books are acceptable.

The book drive runs through Monday April 23 and OU is hoping it will be even more successful than last year.
