New NHK Soap With Okinawan Heroine

Date Posted: 2001-03-30

A must-see for Japanese soap opera addicts is NHK’s morning serial and next Monday a new drama starts, set in Okinawa. The show gets a new story and change of cast every April but the star is always the female lead. This year the audience will be treated to the trials and tribulations of Okinawan girl, Eri Kohagura who devotes her life to medicine.

Twenty one year old Okinawan Ryoko Kuninaka, the nation’s new soap heroine, was chosen from 2,084 girls who auditioned to appear in “Chura-san”, the name of the new drama.

A preview of the soap was shown for the media in Naha and when Kuninaka met the press afterwards she said “we’ve just finished shooting the scene when I announce I’m going to become a nurse. I hope the audience is looking forward to seeing Eri Kohagura growing up.”
