Base Issue Covered by “Parade” Magazine

Date Posted: 2001-03-30

“Should we leave Okinawa?” was the recent cover story headline of the weekly US national magazine “Parade”, which prints 37million copies.

James Webb, a former Reagan administration navy chief, claimed that US bases keep the peace and are protecting Japan from a Chinese threat. He also emphasized the economic effects of the US bases’ 5% contribution to the Okinawan economy.

Webb said the anti-base protest movement’s motto “peaceful Okinawa without bases” was nonsense because it is the US forces that keep the peace in the Far East. He also said discussions about the future of bases in Okinawa should be limited to how to decrease the number of bases, not the withdrawal of US forces from Okinawa.
