Annual “Hamayui” Seaside Cleansing Rite

Date Posted: 2001-03-30

The “Hamayui” annual ritual cleansing was held on many beaches in Okinawa on Tuesday.

During “Hamayui”, which means “going to the beach” in the Okinawan language, many locals go to the seashore with a lunchbox filled with food. They add to the feast by gathering shellfish at low tide. The idea is that while they are doing this, the seawater washes away people’s sins.

Senaga Beach was particularly popular for the ritual and there was a long line of cars on the road leading to it.

“Hamayui” is celebrated on March 3 by the old calendar, or March 27 by the new.
