Beaches Open This Weekend

You can get out your sunshades and volleyballs earlier in Okinawa than anywhere else in Japan. First signs of the approaching summer start this coming weekend with some official beach openings. These continue throughout the month as follows:

Naminoue Beach April 1, Wakasa, Naha. Events: fish catch, beach flags, treasure hunt, sea athletics, dangerous sea creatures exhibition.

Manza Beach April 1, Events: kidsí aquathlon and life saving school, swimming and running competition for elementary school children. Fee: •2,000, including insurance and lunch.

Azama Sun-Sun Beach, Chinen-son, April 14. Events: safety prayer, opening declaration, first swim, beach flags, beach volley ball etc.

Torii Beach April 21. Events: beach blast and volleyball contest.

Zanpa Beach, Yomitan-son, April 21&22. Event: open water swim race.

Ikei-Island Beach April 22. Events: Ikei-island sea carnival, Self Defense Forces brass band demonstration, firemenís rescue demo, first swim, childrenís activities etc.

Sezoko Beach Motobu, Sezoko Island, April 29. Events: sea carnival, tug-of-war, fish catch, beach volley ball, treasure hunt.

Ginowan Tropical Beach, April 29. Events: treasure hunt, fish catch, beach flags, concerts.

Sunset Beach, End of April. Events: safety prayer, first swim by nursery school children.
