100,000 fine imposed for selling alcohol to minors

Date Posted: 2002-02-21

In the case of a liquor store owner and his manager who were previously convicted of selling alcohol to minors, the Naha Domestic Court on Feb. 13 handed down a fine in the amount of 100,000 to both guilty parties. It is the first case in Japan in which purveyors of alcoholic beverages have been successfully prosecuted for selling to minors since a law prohibiting underage drinking was amended last December to include a stipulation for checking identification and penalties for the seller. The crime came to light when a high school student who had drunk awamori sold by the manager to 17-year-olds last December was sent to the hospital for acute alcohol poisoning.
