Pick Your Own Sunflowers – and Prices

Date Posted: 2001-03-23

One sure sign of summer is the blooming of over 40,000 sunflowers all over the island. The prized flowers, which often command high prices in flower shop bouquets, can be picked for any price you like in northern Okinawa.

In the Yagaji area of Nago, sunflower grower Yasuaki Nakazato has a field where anyone can go and pick as many of the flowers as they want. There is a box for donations next to the field. There is nobody watching the box and no indications about prices. Yasuaki says “It doesn’t matter how much you pay. That’s up to you. It’s also all right if you don’t pay but people who love flowers are usually good hearted and I’d be surprised if they didn’t leave anything.”

Yasuaki’s main business is growing chrysanthemums which he sells on the mainland. He started growing sunflowers this year.
