School soccer player accused of beating up fellow studentDate Posted: 2003-02-22 The incident came to light when a parent of the beaten student lodged a protest at the school’s principal’s office. According to the protest, the player had beaten the other student so severely his nose and chin bones had broken and he had laid unconscious on a parking lot in Naha City, where a passerby had found him and helped him to a hospital. An investigation by school officials confirmed that the incident and the identity of the attacker, who had already traveled with the soccer team to Nagasaki. After a meeting with teachers, Tomishiro Minami Principal Youko Kubota decided to order the entire team to return to Okinawa immediately. Tomishiro Police, who also conducted an investigation, confirmed that a 16-year-old school soccer team member had beaten another student on a parking lot in Naha City on February 9. When questioned, the 16-year-old admitted hitting the other student. He claimed the student had constantly harassed one of his friends, who had then asked his help to teach the other boy a lesson. The victim tells a different story. He says the trouble began when they told a group of students to behave themselves in a restaurant, and to stop disturbing other guests. “Those boys did not stop. Instead they brought this soccer team member who then beat me up,” he said. Meanwhile, police say that they are conducting a thorough investigation, after which they will take the case to the prosecutors who then decide whether to press charges. |
