Sunken Ship Re-floated from Coral

A cargo ship that had been stranded on a reef for two months has finally been removed. A Fukuoka company pumped air into the ship and let it float to the surface. It took five hours to remove the 1500 ton, 46 meter long, and 14 meter wide ship from the reef.

The ship, which was stuck on the reef offshore of Iriomote Island, had become one of the most popular diving sites off Iriomote Island. The coral filled diving site was called Barasu Island. Since the December 27 stranding, a lot of the table coral was damaged. After the ship had been taken away diver Masao Kasai photographed the site.
