Most in Yaeyamas Ignorant of Malaria Risks

Date Posted: 2001-03-16

Sixty percent of Yaeyama islanders do not know they are still in an area that has malarial mosquitoes, according to a recent poll. The Yaeyama Health Center ran the poll, which received answers from 7365 Yaeyama Islands residents in Ishigaki City and Taketomi City.

The islands had more than 3000 malaria victims during WWII.

Health Center head Hideoya Murakami said “we cannot ignore the fact that malaria can spread all over Okinawa.”

In 1998 malaria carrying mosquitoes were found on the islands of Ishigaki, Kohama and Iriomote.
