Parents Petition for Sidewalks for ChildrenDate Posted: 2001-03-16 Most Japanese children walk to and from school, but many roads in Okinawa do not have sidewalks. Parents of elementary school and high school children in two Naha districts are worried enough to have decided to start a petition. They are aiming to obtain 5000 signatures calling for better sidewalks for children. Forty residents of Maji and Uema districts met on Monday evening to plan their campaign. Residents said the traffic around Maji elementary school is very heavy and that the road in front of the school does not even have a sidewalk. The head of Uema neighborhood self-governing unit, Kazunori Irabe, said “it is like a miracle that no child has yet died in a traffic jam around the school.” |
