Open Letter to President Bush about Submarine IncidentDate Posted: 2001-03-09 In the recent collision, the Japanese fisheries training ship Ehime Maru was sunk by the USS Greenville off the Coast of the Island of Oahu, State of Hawaii, and nine Japanese are still missing. As Japanese, or rather as individuals, we are saddened by this incidence. For this, we would like to demand following: 1.To publicly declare that the incident was solely caused by the negligence on the part of USS Greenville. 2.To express a sincere apology to those who have suffered from the collision and to the families of those who are still missing, as well as to the Japanese Government. 3.To make all possible efforts to search for those who are still missing in the incident and to recover the sunken ship by utilizing US Submarine rescue teams. 4.To have the United States make humanitarian compensation to those who have suffered from this incident. 5.To learn from this incident, and make yourself responsible to guarantee that no such incident shall occur in the future. I am afraid that if the victims were Europeans, you would have been much more willing to apologize and to make efforts to rescue the missing ship. In other words, the United States seems to still look down Japan even when 56 years have passed since the last war. In this sense, your reluctance does continuously insult all Japanese and might affect the good relationship between the U.S. and Japan. |
