Entrée: Enormous Pizzas at Tiny Prices

By: Dinner Gong

Date Posted: 2001-03-09

Entrée Pizza is a brightly painted, simply furnished place that has been open six months. A family run business, it is actually made out of two cargo containers joined together by father and son. Inside there is a wooden floor, a counter in front of a kitchen containing a large oven. There are just two tables with checkered cloths, some plants, latticed screens, a lace curtain and a yellow and green color scheme.

Entrée only makes pizzas: in two sizes and five varieties. On his wanderings Dinner Gong is used to being offered small samples of the available fare for tasting. However “small” does not seem to be in the vocabulary of this establishment. DG saw one of the sisters who was on duty at the time, putting a pizza into the oven with a spatula the size of a garden spade.

DG and his companion were unconfident about being able to make much of a dent in this giant sized pizza. It was big enough for a party of four or five, yet priced at only ¥1500. This must be the cheapest pizza deal on the island. The crust was thick, the garnishings succulent and as it had only just been made, tasted fresh and delicious.

This was the16 inch variety. The other size that can be ordered is 12 inches, which costs ¥1000. They come in a basic five types, although there is some scope for customizing orders, depending on individual preferences. The choices are as follows: Mixed Pizza has a topping of cheese, pepperoni, green pepper, mushroom, olives, corn, onion and a special sauce. Potato Pizza has cheese, potato, tuna, capsicum, corn, onion and a South Island type sauce made of mayonnaise and ketchup. Taco Pizza has cheese, minced beef, lettuce, tomato, chili powder and special sauce. Pineapple Pizza has cheese, pineapple, bacon, black olives, corn, onion, mayonnaise and sauce. Mayonnaise Pizza has cheese, ham, tuna, asparagus, corn and onion and of course mayonnaise.

If customers want variations on these, they can for instance order a pepperoni and cheese pizza and get correspondingly larger proportions of those ingredients than the others for the same price.

Five soft drinks are available at Entrée: Coke, orange, calpis, oolong tea and iced tea. They come in ¥150 and ¥100 sizes.

Entrée has never done any advertising, nor distributed any flyers, so its present customers are those who live in the locality or have heard about it by word of mouth. The sister serving the day DG visited says she gets about ten American patrons a month. There would surely be more if they knew about this opportunity to feed a family for the price of a single serving. Entrée does not do deliveries but takes telephone orders for a takeout service. Any order will be ready in ten or 15 minutes if anyone telephoning simply states the size and which of the five types they want. Those two words will be sufficient to secure the order, says Entrée. Make it any more complicated than that and you might run into a language barrier. Tel 930-0522.

Entrée is open 11 am to 9 pm every day except Wednesday.
