Summit Criticised as Wasteful

Date Posted: 2000-07-31

Not everyone agrees that the Summit was such a success. Jubilee 2000, a group that advocates cancellation of the debts of the world’s poorest countries, says that the Summit was complete waste.

“Instead of seizing the opportunity and taking concrete steps, the participants merely reiterated their old slogans that have been proven empty in the past,” Jubilee Director Ann Pettifor said in a statement she released in London, the group’s headquarters.

Many of Britain’s leading newspapers also lamented the cost of the Summit which they claimed came to an unprecedented ¥80 billion. That’s 50 times the cost of the previous two summits. According to Jubilee 2000, that would be enough to pay off the debts of Gambia and Equatorial Guinea. The newspapers also calculated that the money spent on the Summit would have paid the cost of education for 12.5 million children in the world’s poor countries.

“It makes absolutely no sense for the world’s richest countries to gather to discuss poverty and surround themselves with a show of such affluence,” Jubilee 2000 statement said.
