Clinton First G-8 Leader to Leave

Date Posted: 2000-07-31

The Okinawa G-8 Summit wrapped up Sunday morning with a morning meeting at Busena Resort, then the leaders left shortly afterwards. U.S. President Bill Clinton was the first leader to leave the island. He took off onboard Air Force One from Kadena Air Base around 1 p.m. heading back to Israeli Palestinian peace negotiations at Camp David. A group of Okinawan and American children performed eisa to the President at the departure ceremony.

Okinawa City Mayor Masakazu Nakasone gave the President a farewell speech and the President agreed to pose for a picture with the Mayor. Both the President and the first daughter Chelsea reportedly told the children that they would like to visit Okinawa again with whole family in the future, as private citizens, after the President finishes his term in the office.
