Hotelsí G-8 Losses and Gains

Date Posted: 2000-07-31

Okinawan resorts and hotels estimate that the G-8 Summit caused them a loss totaling •3 billion. The decrease in the number of visitors to the prefecture is estimated at 110,000.

Ordinary tourists were banned from the hotels where the leaders stayed and many stayed away because they feared that the tight security would ruin their vacation if they came.

However, the picture is not all that black. Most of the resorts expect more than make up their losses because of the increased bookings in the aftermath of the Summit. Already, the major resorts and hotels are booked solid through September and they expect the business stay brisk through the end of the year.
