Summit English Amuses Visitors

Date Posted: 2000-07-31

Foreign participants to the G-8 Summit found the English language in the billboards and announcements to be the most amusing aspect of the Summit. Many sentences found on the billboards caused a number of laughs and jokes among the members of the media and delegations.

The fact is perhaps not completely unexpected given the fact that Japan is famous the world over for the “English” slogans found everywhere from T-shirts to billboards that often leave a native English speaker puzzled to say the least.

Many also found it odd that many companies who flew the national flags of the participating countries had no compunction about hoisting their company flag right next to the national flags and in some instances on the same flag pole under one of the national flags.
