Date Posted: 2001-03-09

Two American teenagers who live on Kadena Air Base were arrested last Friday on suspicion of setting fire to cars, stealing a car and crashing it into a storefront. Another teenager in the U.S. is wanted by police in connection with the offenses.

The three are accused of setting on fire a car parked in Kitankagusuku village on the afternoon of January 19, which resulted in eight cars catching alight. A week later, in the early morning of January 26 they are believed to have set fire to cars in the parking lot of Sashiki Town Recreational Center, in a supermarket parking lot of in the same town and in a car repair shop in Okinawa City.

They are thought also be responsible for stealing a car and ramming it into a clothing shop in Nago, damaging the store and its contents.

The boys in custody, an 18 year old college student and a 17 year old high school student, told police they had done it just for the hell of it. The three have not been publicly named because of Japanís Juvenile Law.

A 19 year old thought to be the main culprit in the incidents returned to the United States in early February. Police who have taken out an arrest warrant for him, have been trying to question him through U.S. military authorities.
