Iriomote Scheme to Stop Spread of Cat AIDS

Date Posted: 2001-03-09

Iriomote wild cats which are found only on Iriomote island, are in danger of contracting FIV, the feline version of AIDS from domesticated cats. So far, three house cats infected with FIV have been found on the island.

As a way of preventing the spread of the disease a new regulation will be proposed at tomorrow’s monthly City Assembly.

Taketomi Town will propose a domestic cat registration scheme which would require the owners of cats to detail the types of cats they own and their markings, fur types and other physical characteristics. They would also have to divulge whether or not the animals have been spayed. The cats would also be made to wear collars to identify them as domestic pets.
