World Heritage Photo Exhibition

Date Posted: 2001-03-09

A World Heritage Photo Exhibition takes place next Saturday March 17 until Sunday March 25 at Okinawa Convention Center. On display will be 110 large blow-ups of some of the most spectacular World Heritage sites, taken by well-known photographers. The shots include Shuri castle in Okinawa which was added to the World Heritage list, along with eight other Okinawan sites this year.

160 countries have signed the 1972 Convention for Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, recognizing that the sites on their own territory are to be protected by the international community. Without this support some sites would deteriorate or disappear through lack of funding.

Member States contribute 1% of their UNESCO dues to a World Heritage Fund which in turn is used to identify and preserve World Heritage sites. The budget is a modest $3.5 million a year, often making it necessary to solicit donations for specific projects, some of which are very expensive.

Cultural heritage refers to monuments, groups of buildings and sites with historical, aesthetic, archaeological, scientific, ethnological or anthropological value. Natural heritage refers to outstanding physical, biological and geological formations, habitats of threatened species of animals and plants and areas with scientific, conservation or aesthetic value.

One way to learn about this work is on a TV show called “The World Heritage” on TBS at 11:30pm every Sunday. In addition to the photo exhibition, there will be a documentary film on how the TV show was made. The photo exhibition is open 10 am to 6 pm and admission is: adults ¥800, university & high school students ¥600, junior high & elementary school students ¥300. Tel 860-2055.
