Marines Work Long Hours at Post OfficeDate Posted: 2001-03-02 You said you have seen the services at Camp Foster post office go down in the past few years. Wow, I have been here since May of 1997 and have seen nothing but improvements to all Marine Corps Post Offices on Okinawa. Especially to the Camp Foster Post Office. By the way, I am GySgt Simpson, a Marine Corps Postal Clerk. Unlike yourself I am not afraid to put my name in the paper when writing an article. You talk about the hours of operations at the post office and that it doesn't suit your needs. Well let me tell you about the hours the young Marines who work at the post office go through on a daily basis. The Marines’ day usually starts at 0500 and ends around 1900 (14 hr days). They don't get a two hour lunch break, only about 20 minutes to inhale a sandwich and a coke then back to serve the customers. They still have to PT, shoot on the range, study their Marine Corps history and maintain all their required training, as well as learning their job. As you can see they keep pretty busy and have little time for themselves. To state in your letter in the Japan Update we are not working enough hours, that to me is selfishness on your part. Remember these Marines at the post office have families to take care of also. I guarantee that you don't work a 14 hour day and never have. Maybe when we were looking for volunteers to help us through the holiday season you should have volunteered your time to ease the burden. Or maybe you were spending that time with your family. As for letting the Air Force take over the post office, they do an outstanding job at Kadena with a very large patron population to satisfy. What you probably also don't know we have 7 other post offices to run on Okinawa and that is a lot of customers to satisfy. My suggestion to you is next time you are in the post office tell the young Marines that are there in the morning around 0630 after they run PT thank you for a job well done instead of showing them your stupidity in the newspaper. |
